Faculty interested in Mentor Program may self-nominate

Faculty who are interested in serving as mentors to new faculty during the 2019-2020 academic year are invited to contact The University Institute for Teaching and Learning.

Part of the Institute’s Instructional Support work focuses on the Faculty FIT Program. This program offers a set of coordinated learning experiences that focus on professional development for instructional faculty, and particularly strives to engage faculty new to The Ohio State University.

An integral part of Faculty FIT is the Mentoring Program, which:

  • Matches a small multi-disciplinary cohort of new faculty with a faculty mentor.
  • Engages new-to-Ohio State faculty with experienced faculty known for their exemplary teaching.
  • Creates a community of new faculty and mentors to support teaching and learning.

Mentoring Program goals are:

  • To guide and advise new faculty in understanding their place at Ohio State.
  • To engage new faculty in conversations that encourage reflection and introspection around teaching.
  • To assist new faculty in documenting teaching for skills improvement and review/tenure.

Mentor expectations:

  • Attend a Spring orientation meeting.
  • Attend the Kick-off meeting in August.
  • Meet on a monthly basis with the cohort throughout Autumn and Spring semesters.
  • Submit fieldnotes of meeting dates, topics discussed, issues raised by individual new faculty (and if possible, how resolved).
  • Attend Faculty FIT Program milestone events, such as the December end-of term check-in and May end-of year celebration events.

A $1000 professional development fund will be awarded to each mentor.

Faculty may self nominate by Friday March 15, 2019. Self-nominated faculty are also requested to have a letter of support sent from a chair, dean, or colleague to uitl@osu.edu by Friday March 15, 2019.
