Over the past 13 years, Jennifer Herman has gained extensive experience in developing and teaching a variety of courses for students at all levels across the university. As a graduate student, she engaged in the Department of English’s graduate teaching associate first-year writing pedagogy training workshop and course (led by Dr. Scott DeWitt), but she also sought out further opportunities—both short- and long-term: attending workshops on teaching second-year writing (under Dr. Kay Halasek), completing a semester-long teaching apprenticeship under Dr. H. Lewis Ulman (Professor Emeritus), and participating in the prestigious Digital Media and Composition Institute. As her experience and interest in teaching grew, she pursued development in curricular assessment and implementation, collaborating with Dr. Jonathan Buehl to develop an assessment plan for the Professional and Business Writing and Technical Writing courses, and helping other instructors develop their comfort and competency with implementing digital media as an associate in the Department’s Digital Media Project.

Her interest in enhancing the learning outcomes and experiences of OSU students has grown and developed further in my role as a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Engineering Education. Here, she has continued to grow her understanding of effective instruction and curriculum design by seeking opportunities to learn from teaching and learning experts through the University Center for the Advancement of Teaching and the Michael V. Drake Institute for Teaching and Learning. In 2020, her teaching was recognized when she was awarded the Dean’s Award for Outstanding Teaching by a Lecturer.
