Associate director attends University Innovation Alliance public learning event
The University Institute for Teaching and Learning joined academic leaders on the University Innovation Alliance team attending the UIA’s Proactive Advising Public Learning Event held in Washington, DC, Sept. 19 and 20.
Melinda Rhodes-DiSalvo, UITL associate director for Strategic Partnerships and Collaborations, joined David Graham, assistant vice provost for Student Academic Success; Tiffany Polite, UIA fellow; Dawn Kitchen, associate dean at Mansfield and professor of anthropology; and Daniel DeMay, assistant director, analysis and reporting, Student Academic Services.
The Ohio State University is a member of UIA, a national coalition of public research universities committed to increasing number and diversity of college graduates. This UIA event shared findings of the predictive analytics-enabled proactive advising study and the positive impact of proactive advising on select UIA campuses. This type of intervention involved intensive advising to help student navigate key academic choices and establish individualized academic maps, early and real-time alerts when they go off path, and timely advising interventions to get them back on the appropriate path.
In addition to the public learning event, UIA members received updates on several other UIA initiatives, including completions grants and college to career redesign. Ohio State’s own story about reimagining the college to career pathway for most vulnerable students has been shared by UIA.
Rhodes-DiSalvo said she found the panel on “Big Ideas to Consider and Challenges to Tackle: Where Leadership Is Needed for the Future of Higher Education” compelling. Representatives from Excelencia in Education, the Institute for Higher Education Policy, the Council for Adult and Experiential Learning and InsideHigherEd highlighted the importance of systematic collection and analysis of data to inform strategic work on diversity, as well as the work higher education might improve upon to establish the outcomes by which they will be measured.
UIA also shared the short video, “What ‘Success’ in college means to students in their own words,” with those attending.
